A Time To Read – COVID-19 Shutdown [7 Great Reads Just For You]

There is so much in the media about COVID-19, and rightly so, the world has not seen a challenge this big ever before!  Not being an expert on viruses and not wanting to be an “ambulance chaser” by speaking to fears, I decided to share some great reads with you.  Allow me to encourage you to take your mind off these trying times and make shutdown your time to read.  The books presented here, will all help you grow in one way or another.   I invite you to join me as I meander through just a few of my favourites and offer you a brief review on each so that you can enjoy this shutdown period as a gorgeous time to read.

A Time To Read

1.  The Slight Edge Jeff Olsen

I read this book last year.  It’s well written, a very easy read and incredibly helpful.  It gently nudges you into action, this is not one of those loud TAKE ACTION NOW!, ra-ra motivational books, it is solid and encouraging and gears you up step by step with logic thrown in for good measure.

The essence of The Slight Edge is how small daily actions all add up and create the big outcomes we seek.  I really have précised it down to the bare minimum.  There is a lot more depth to this book than just two lines of review, for me it was:

  • encouraging
  • motivating
  • mindset altering (in a very positive way)
  • enjoyable
  • worth telling you about here

2.  An Oldie But A Goodie – The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

There are oldies that are well worth going back to over and over again.  This book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is one of those for me.

If you have already read the book, I encourage you to read it again.  If not, definitely get your hands on this one, you will not be sorry.

So what are the 7 Habits that Stephen Covey speaks about?  Here they are in order:

  • Be proactive.
  • Begin with the end in mind.
  • First things first.
  • Think win-win.
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
  • Synergize!
  • Sharpen the Saw; Growth.

These 7 habits can have a profound effect on you life – in business and in relationships.  Stephen Covey also wrote The 8th Habit, I have not read it yet but have plans to over the national shutdown in South Africa.

3.  You Are A Badass At Making Money Jen Sincero

This is one of my current reads … yeah, I am one of those people who must have multiple books on the go at one time… sorry, not sorry, lol!

I am absolutely loving this book. Just going by the title, it is one I would not ordinarily read, however, when your Bestie recommends something, it is always worth paying attention to.

Jen Sincero writes in day to day speech. She is humorous, eloquent, and really does grab hold of poetic license in the most effective way. The content of You Are A Badass At Making Money is extremely interesting. She is a little “woo woo” or esoteric in the way she speaks about The Universe and so on. In other words, it is quite Law of Attraction focused.

Now, I believe in the Creator of the Universe and He is my Heavenly Father and Creator too.  As a result, I do not buy into the Law Of Attraction in the sense of calling on the universe to supply my needs.

Why would I call on the created (the universe) when I can call on the Creator?  I do believe that the Law of Attraction works along the same principles as the Bible. In other words, the way God has designed things to work. Ask and you will receive is a perfect example, here is the full passage:

Ask, Seek, Knock

7“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

My recommendation when reading this book is to enjoy it, take the wisdom from it, do the exercises (and, more importantly … the mindset work, for example, dig in and find out what you believe about money and why) and I am certain that this book will take you places in your money-making journey.

You will find that in the exercises Sincero speaks about “being grateful to money” and saying “I love money” … this is an area where I exercise caution, the Bible says “The Love Of Money Is The Root Of All Evil”.

For me, money is a tool, when we make lots of it, we can do a lot of good with it.  It’s not something to love.

4.  Without Rival  Lisa Bevere

I am reading this book currently and have to say that it’s compelling reading, so beautifully written and filled with gems.

For example, did you know that God does not love us all equally?  Yes, you read that right … according to Lisa Bevere, God does not love us all the same.

You will have to read the book to learn more about that, trust me, it will be money and time well spent.

5.  Girls With Swords Lisa Bevere

I have not read this book … yet .  So why am I including it in these brief reviews then?  Well, on Amazon, this book has received hundreds of reviews (more than 500!) and 84% of them are 5 Star!

From the reviews I have read I can see that Girls With Swords is one of those books that offers incredible tools to equip women, teens and girls through challenging times, such as we find ourselves in now.

Parents are reading this book with their children and helping them to navigate turbulent times – it’s a perfect read for this time in our lives!

6.  Captivating : Unveiling The Mystery Of A Woman’s Soul John & Stasi Eldredge

I first read this beautiful book in 2007, or thereabouts.  It is a truth-filled and captivating read.  The writers delve into the way girls and women were created and what our deepest needs are from our father and the significant man in our lives.

This is the way God designed us and makes so much sense.  I realize that there are women’s libbers who may not agree with this book.  All I ask is that you read this book with an open heart and an open mind.

If you are a woman, read to understand yourself and your daughter/s better.  If you are a man, this is a must-read and will give you insight into how the women in your life were created, what makes them tick.  Yes, it will make you a better husband and father, of that I have no doubt.

As with Braveheart below, I do believe that this book will assist men in navigating the world of women in his life.  Understanding more about how women are created can only enrich your relationship with them.

7.  Wild At Heart : Discovering The Secret Of A Man’s Soul John Eldredge

Now this book was a huge eye opener for me!  It is an absolute must-read for mothers of boys.  I cannot recommend it enough.

As women navigating the mind and ways of the men in our lives, this book will provide answers to questions you may not even have known you are asking or need to ask.

The lovely thing about both Captivating and Wild At Heart is the way they are written.  They are easy to follow and but not without some elements that will challenge what you believe and how you see things.  Both books are highly relatable, the authors share their experiences in a way that makes the concepts very easy to comprehend.  Important Note:  these two books will help you to provide your sons and daughters with exactly what they need to become men and women of substance.

  1. I don’t see reading as a favorite past time as some people think but it’s during times of reading that we can expand our knowledge as well as our vocabulary and strengthen our brains at the same time. Books are like a classroom where we can grow and learn.

Now that book that you talk about where the author says that God does not love us all the seem I got to see for my self because as far as I know especially from reading my bible God’s love is great to all mankind according to Jonh 3:16. Thanks so much for the insights on these books.

    • Hi Norman
Thank you for stopping by to read about some of my favourite books. Perhaps audible books will be better for you? I will do some research to find some and share those too.
I can see you didn’t read the little precise on Without Rival word for word – what she said is God doesn’t love us all equally. He absolutely does love us all. Check the book out, it will explain everything 🙂
      Blessings as always

  2. Great idea. With all this time on our hands in the short term future, taking that time to nourish the mind, body and soul is a great idea. Jen Sincero’s book sounds interesting….agree with your assessment on the title, without reading your quick review there is no way I’d pick this book up. Just read Mark Manson’s “Subtle Art of not Giving a F*ck”….read that because it came recommended, but I hated the title. I got some value from it, but i won’t go out of my way to pick up his follow up book.
    Thanks for the recommendation

    • Hi Bob
Thank you so much – it amazes me how much the world has changed with regard to the acceptability of language. There are so many incredible words in the English language, I sometimes feel we are losing the art of beautiful writing because of the way things have changed in literature. I know Shakespeare is not everyone’s cup of tea, but man, his use of language was ingenious!
I’ve also heard about the book you mention, interesting to see you won’t pick up the next book – clearly, the value you received was not substantial enough. I wouldn’t read the book not only because of the language but also because of my understanding of the subject matter. I do give a …., in other words, I do care, and I always want to care. Maybe I’ve misunderstood, who knows.
Thank you again for stopping by.
