How To Work And Travel – Edition 2 – by Late Bloomer
This article is going to speak about more than one opportunity where I am going to show you How To Work and Travel. It’s exciting stuff I am telling you, so stick with me – if the travel bug has bitten, these are sure-fire ways to scratch that travel bug itch!
1. BECOME AN ONLINE ENTREPRENEUR
There is more than one way to become an online entrepreneur, you could go with my Number 1 Recommendation and build your own online business. This is not for the fainthearted, particularly not in the beginning. It takes a lot of hard work and persistence BUT, once your business is up and running, you can create a life of financial and geographic freedom for yourself – and, if you are one of my kindred spirits, you can also fulfill the desire to make a difference in the lives of others!
You Will Need 4 key things:
1. A Niche – which you select based on your interests. (Interesting? You can find out more in this article: What Is A Niche Website About?)
2. A Website (Much easier than you may think, you can build your own in less than a minute! Read this article How To Build A Website In WordPress in 60 seconds (includes video evidence)
3. Traffic to your website – getting visitors to your site (This takes more effort and work, but it’s very doable, have a look at some ideas here HowTo Get Free Traffic To Your Website)
4. Earn Revenue by promoting offers (this is how you will sell the products, you can create traffic organically, typically done via reviews and comparisons, but there are other options like PPC campaigns for example)

2. WORK AS A CONSULTANT
If you have “a particular set of skills” to offer and a great track record, then you can offer your services as a consultant. If that is you, I encourage you to just do it!
Fortune Favors the Brave!
Examples of Consultants are as follows:
- Business transformation
- Engineering
- Educational
- Human Resources
- Immigration
- Process Consultants (specialists in design or improvement of operational processes)
- Public Relations
- Performance Consultants (focusing on the execution of an initiative or overall performance of their client)
- Sales
- Strategic (also known as management consultants) Business, Marketing, Sales, PR
- Web Design
- Digital
As a consultant, you work for yourself and then you are in total control of where you live, when you travel etc. You enjoy the flexibility of working remotely, traveling around as you work. It really does give you many freedoms. Plus, you get to decide when you want to work and how much you earn! What a pleasure!
3. JOIN AN INTERNATIONAL CONCERN
Would you prefer to be employed by a company? We are not all built to be entrepreneurs – thankfully there are opportunities where you can join a company which has international offices
Many companies with an international footprint offer the opportunity for their staff to work from offices in other parts of the world. If you prove yourself, work hard and are dedicated to the company, there is no reason for them to not consider offering you opportunities to move around internationally. Have a chat with the Human Resources team for this, they will be able to give you the inside track. Companies who offer international opportunities are the likes of:
- Procter and Gamble
- Deloitte
- Edelman
- Nestle
- General Electric
- SC Johnson
- General Electric

4. BECOME A DIGITAL NOMAD
The role of a digital nomad is not too different from that of an online entrepreneur or consultant. As a digital nomad, you have the freedom to work anywhere in the world you choose.
Careers such as Writers, Graphic Designer, and Website Developer give you the ability to work with your clients virtually.
Need some skills to help you along the way with becoming a Digital Nomad? I have just the online university for you, and you get to experience the opportunity for free! That’s right, no bank card information required at all:
Not only this is an awesome training platform but it also offers an incredible community of online entrepreneurs who assist one another generously with their knowledge and expertise and support each other in times of highs and lows.
5. TRAVEL BLOGGER OR VLOGGER (OR FASHION, FOOD, SPORT, LIFESTYLE, ETC.) BLOGGER OR VLOGGER
To do this you would need to have your own platform (website/blog) and as you travel and experience different cultures, activities, foods etc., you would write articles or post videos of yourself immersed in whatever it is you are sharing. This can be a very interesting and exciting way to travel and earn!
You need to be highly organized and very disciplined to ensure you do not get too involved in enjoying the moment and miss the opportunity to document it. You would also need to be disciplined you’re your time, having a great time but also ensuring that you dedicate time to building your business.
If you are interested in traveling the world and sharing your experiences, this could be an awesome opportunity for you. There are successful bloggers who get to take advantage of free or paid trips, complimentary clothing, and gifts plus free or paid trips! Very exciting!
Generally, though these are the people who already have a substantial online following. I know of a couple who have made it pretty big with their drone footage – I have seen travel companies making use of the footage they have taken. That same couple has been the beneficiaries of amazing paid for trips in exchange for their drone work and promotion of the resorts and airlines to their list.
Need to learn how to build a website, blog, promote online, and build your list? No problem, have a look at these options to get you up at running, each of them is linked to a review I have written especially for you:
6. DESTINATION WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
This is a fabulous opportunity for you if you are keen to travel and take photographs. Of course, you will need to have the skills and abilities to do the job – you need to be a photographer, preferably with a portfolio to share and promote yourself. The wedding industry is huge and destination weddings are extremely popular. This career will enable you to combine your passion for travel and photography. What a win!
7. FREELANCING
As a freelancer, you can create the opportunity to travel wherever and whenever you choose. As a writer, photographer, designer, or anything that offers creative services, you have the advantage of offering your services on a freelance basis. You could do some research and find the publishers and websites that recruit the services of freelancers. When you have proven yourself in this space you can charge the top end fees too.
Have a look at these companies with a view to signing up:
8. DIVER MASTER, PILATES OR GYM INSTRUCTOR, OR TEACHER
Loads of people travel all over the world and work by teaching and sharing their passion for things like Scuba Diving, Pilates, Surfing, and Skiing – those are just the sporty ones I’ve mentioned. How about teaching Photography, Art Classes (Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, Pottery, etc), Scrapbooks, Vision Boards, Drone Photography and Video work. The list is endless. You can do this in person in different parts of the world and you could create a course or academy and set it up online, making money online too! There are programs such as Udemy, Teachable, and CourseCraft where you teach your skills virtually and generate an income.
I’ll let you in on a little secret … becoming a pilates instructor is one of my goals, not only for the money, rather because I love doing pilates and this is a great (healthy) way to get out and about a bit too.
9. PILOT OR FLIGHT ATTENDANT
Perhaps flying really appeals to you – if so, this is an awesome way to travel the world and get paid for it. It does mean being away from home a lot, but that is the point of this article, it is for those of us with wanderlust!
10. TOUR GUIDE
Tour Guides are in demand with the travel companies. You would need to study up everything about the area you want to work in, really become an expert on it, and then offer your services in the area. Are you multi-lingual? This will really give you the advantage!
11. ENGLISH TEACHER
English instruction is in high demand. There are opportunities to teach English online or face to face at schools and/or at Language Centers all over the world.
The earning potential varies depending on the region and your level of education. For example, a qualified teacher, or person with a degree and TEFL or TESOL, will find work with ease in China, and be paid top dollar!
The demand for English teachers can be seen in Europe, Asia and South America. TEFL even offer paid internships, they will place you and you get to earn as you learn.
There are also opportunities for you to travel and study to become a qualified TEFL ESL (English Second Language) teacher onsite in counties like Thailand, Vietnam and Spain for example.
Teaching English online is also something to consider. Again, you would need to be a native English speaker and have qualifications to offer, such as TEFL or TESOL. As mentioned above, both these qualifications can be achieved onsite on the different programs, but, you can complete them online too.
I wrote an even more detailed article on this topic in an article called Start Teaching English Online With A Top Notch TEFL Certification – you can use this advice to travel and teach or teach online, really versatile.
12. AU PAIR
Can you see yourself working with children? Yes? Then you are perfect for this opportunity.
There are cultural exchange programs where you live with a host family and care for their children. If you are an English native speaker, this could be combined with teaching English to the children (and family) and learning their language too. These opportunities are offered on contracts that can be long or short term.
Just keep in mind that you will also be likely to assist with things like housework. I have heard of many people who had the expectation of working with children only and were surprised by the expectation of cooking and cleaning too.
13. WORK ONBOARD A CRUISE LINER OR YACHT
Do you have sea legs? Are you comfortable out on the high seas? This could well be the opportunity for you. There are many opportunities on the big cruise liners, from working as a chef in the kitchens to entertainment (singers, dancers, musicians, comedians etc), trainers for different types of exercises and games, photographers, barmen and women, hospitality staff (reception, housekeeping, etc) and then, of course, the actual deck hands or seamen and women.
Working this way can be a great adventure for you. In addition to the advantages of working and living on- board the ship (your living expenses are taken care of), you also get to see places all over the world!
On a yacht (depending on the size) the opportunities are fewer, there is still work for deckhands and chefs though, just on a smaller scale. Again, you get to travel and see different places wherever you sail!
14. CAMP COUNSELOR
This is another opportunity to work with kids. You could become a camp counselor! Countries all over the world look for qualified counselors, Europe, Australia, America, and even in South Africa! These roles are seasonal and temporary, that has its advantages too though – save as much as you can in camp season, and travel out of camp season.
15. TRAVEL NURSE
As a qualified and experienced nurse, you could consider becoming a travel nurse. A quick Google search revealed programs such as TravelNursing.org and their role is to connect you with potential employers.
16. CARER
Carers are in high demand the world over – simply because people are living longer than ever, the population of the aged is larger than it ever has been. There are many, many agencies all over the world, for posts all over the world. I have a friend who loves to travel and scuba dive, she does that by caring for a season and traveling for a season. What a life she has!
Some carer clients are very independent and only require your services for part of the time, others are a full-time job. You will need to be a compassionate and caring person, physically strong and able to do the work, and there are many agencies that provide training courses for this career.
17. LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR
Are you multilingual? You’re in luck! You can make good use of your language abilities and become a translator for the likes of Government Agencies, travel companies, and many, many more! These organizations are in constant need of excellent translators.
If you are highly skilled in reading, writing, and speaking another language, you should really consider this option and these companies:
18. SALES
I have traveled locally and internationally in a sales role. Your employer pays you to travel and see their clients.
It’s a great way to travel but can be very restrictive when it comes to how much you get to see of your destination. I’ll give you an example, I was sent to New Delhi for four days – my role was to meet and sell to exhibitors at a massive exhibition. When I say massive, the actual exhibition itself was enormous and the visitor numbers were in the region of 90,000 per day! As it happened, I had only four days to cover all the ground of this massive exhibition – looking for opportunities to speak with potential clients in amongst the 90,000 visitors per day! I worked extremely hard and had limited time to see New Delhi itself. I did have the opportunity to experience some of the city and the culture of her people, but certainly not enough to be able to say that I have seen New Delhi.
If you are good at sales, there is no reason why your company would not want to give you this kind of opportunity. If they don’t, the advantage is that great sales skills are transferable, you can apply to other companies if need be.
19. VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
I have seen quite a few people advertising their services as virtual assistants on LinkedIn. There seems to be an increasing demand for virtual assistants with entrepreneurs and startup companies – certainly, any company that is looking to reduce their staff costs – hiring remotely positioned people make perfect sense.
Working as a virtual assistant is a great opportunity for you to live and travel wherever you want and still earn an income.
20. PEACE CORPS
Ever thought of joining the Peace Corps? This is a great opportunity to volunteer in another part of the world. Notice though, this is a volunteer opportunity. If you have the heart to make a difference in the world, the Peace Corps looks like a fantastic opportunity to do just that. Though it is a volunteer opportunity, in Peace Corps you do receive benefits such as:
- your student loans may be deferred

In fact, not only furbabies, there are even opportunities to take care of farm animals. You can do this through an incredible organization called TrustedHouse Sitters. 23. BARTEND

Typically, this is a high turnover job which means that bartenders are always in high demand – particularly in peak season at resorts hotels and results.
The best gigs can be found at lounges, restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes, and hotels. If you are multilingual, that will really work to your benefit!
Wrapping It Up
So there you have it, 23 ideas of how to work and travel. I hope you have enjoyed reading this article as much as I have enjoyed researching and writing it.
Having covered all the above, I still believe in my Number 1 Recommendation as the top of the pops! Why? When you build your own online business it remains your own. You can work from anywhere in the world, all you need is a laptop and internet connection. This way your income is not dependent on employers or clients. It is your business and so long as you put in the required effort and stay abreast of the online business trends, there is no reason why you cannot live the life you desire, where you want, doing what you love.
In fact, I would go as far as to say you can do a combination of your own online business and travel the world doing some other things recommended on this list. For example, are you crazy about scuba diving? Why not build your online business in this niche and travel the world teaching as a divemaster? That way you have your finger on the pulse of your target market, you are indulging yourself in your passion, and you have an online business that can sustain you indefinitely. It’s a win/win situation!
I look forward to any feedback or comments you may have for me. Are there traveling career opportunities I have missed out on? Let me know, I am more than happy to research and include additional opportunities for you.
Blessings always
PS Yes, that is me – I always find it helps to put a face to the words. I’ve changed a bit since 2012 at New Delhi World Book Fair, but it’s still me.
WOW Louise – some great ideas here.
Strange as it sounds I’ve done a few of these and applied for others – like working on a cruise ship and found it quite hard to break into. I never did get that job on board as a golf instructor. They obviously do all sorts of things on cruises and I had this romantic idea of being in demand. It never happened – sadly. 🙁
I also pet and house-sat for about 6 years in an unpaid capacity. I did live for free and got to see most of New Zealand. That was fun.
Looking through your list of 22 ideas the one’s that appeal to me involve travel and don’t require any formal training. At a certain age in life who has the time to spend years learning a new skill?
Which is why I was very happy to come across Wealthy Affiliate – there you can learn all the skills you need to make a living a number of ways online. And all while continuing to talk about a subject you are passionate about.
Mmmm … you have me thinking maybe I should apply to teach English in Thailand – I always wanted to go there.
Take care out there and happy travelling.
Lawrence
Hi Lawrence
So glad you enjoyed this article and all the ideas. Like you, I have the travel bug! Interesting to see you did the pet and house sitting for such a long time, that is definitely on my “bucket list”! My ultimate plan is to have my Wealthy Affiliate business sustain me as I travel and do all the other lovely things too. So many ways to travel and make money, we just need to open our minds up to the possibilities!
Wishing you every success & happy travels too.
Blessings
Louise
Wow, Louise, you have very ambitious goals I admire those that do.
I wish you well in accomplishing your goals and inspiring others to do so. There is a lot of good information here. I wish I was a few years younger. I too love to travel and explore.
I have been to a few places and have had a very full life. Alas, those days are over. Instead of working on a cruise ship I will take a cruise instead(O|:
Linda
Ah, I love the way you think – taking a cruise instead of being employed on a cruise ship certainly is first prize!
That’s what makes the Wealthy Affiliate opportunity so awesome, we can work and travel if we choose, including going on a cruise 🙂
Thank you so much.
Blessings
Louise
